Providing search and recommendation algorithms that are efficient and effective has been the main goal for both the industry and academia. However, such algorithms lead to models, trained on historical data, that might exacerbate existing biases and/or user behavior. In order to provide all the stakeholders involved in the information retrieval process with more equitable results, being able to assess and mitigate these biases is a primary property for search and recommendation algorithms. In this workshop, we aim to collect novel contributions in this emerging field and to provide a common ground for interested researchers and practitioners.

BIR: 11th International Workshop on Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval
Acronym: BIR 2021
Organizers:
- Ingo Frommholz, University of Bedfordshire, UK
- Philipp Mayr, GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Cologne, Germany
- Guillaume Cabanac, University of Toulouse, France

The Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval workshop series (BIR) at ECIR goes into its 11th iteration. In this workshop, we will tackle issues related to academic search, at the intersection between Information Retrieval and Bibliometrics. We strive to get the ‘retrievalists’ and ‘citationists’ active in both academia and the industry together, who are developing search engines and recommender systems for scholarly search.

MICROS: 1st Workshop on Mixed-Initiative ConveRsatiOnal Systems
Acronym: MICROS
Organizers:
- Ida Mele (IASI-CNR Rome, IT)
- Cristina Ioana Muntean (ISTI-CNR Pisa, IT)

The 1st Edition of the Workshop on “Mixed-Initiative ConveRsatiOnal Systems” (MICROS@ECIR2021) aims at investigating and collecting novel ideas and contributions in the field of conversational systems. These systems provide a conversational interface for different tasks ranging from seeking information to performing e-commerce transactions.
MICROS will have a particular focus on mixed-initiative conversational systems. These proactive systems do not simply propose answers but also provide possible interpretations for ambiguous and vague requests.
We invite people working on conversational search as well as interactive recommendation to send us their position and research papers. We welcome submissions on approaches for conversational search, recommendation, evaluation techniques, data creation and curation, as well as domain-specific applications for conversational systems. All the accepted papers will be presented as contribution talks and will have the opportunity to be published in the CEUR proceedings. The workshop will also have keynote talks by experienced researchers and a panel discussion to share insights about conversational systems.

ROMCIR: Reducing Online Misinformation through Credible Information Retrieval
Acronym: ROMCIR 2021
Organizers:
- Fabio Saracco, IMT School For Advanced Studies Lucca
- Marco Viviani, University of Milano-Bicocca
Website URL: https://romcir2021.disco.unimib.it/
The ROMCIR (Reducing Online Misinformation through Credible Information Retrieval) 2021 workshop, as part of the satellite events of the ECIR (European Conference on Information Retrieval) 2021 conference, aims at providing access to users to credible and/or verified information online, to mitigate the information disorder phenomenon. By “information disorder” we mean all forms of communication pollution, from misinformation made out of ignorance, to intentional sharing of false content. In this context, all those approaches that can serve to the assessment of the credibility of information circulating online and in social media, in particular, find their place. This topic is very broad, as it concerns different contents (e.g., Web pages, news, reviews, medical information, online accounts, etc.), different Web and social media platforms (e.g., microblogging platforms, social networking services, social question-answering systems, etc.), and different purposes (e.g., identifying false information, accessing information based on its credibility, retrieving credible information, etc.).

Although the understanding of natural language has improved over the last couple of years – with research works emerging on the grounds of information extraction and text mining – the problem of constructing consistent narrative structures is yet to be solved. In the fourth edition of the Text2Story workshop, we aim to foster the discussion of recent advances in the link between Information Retrieval (IR) and formal narrative representations from texts. Specifically, we aim to provide a common forum to consolidate the multi-disciplinary efforts and foster discussions to identify the wide-ranging issues related to the narrative extraction task.
