ATTENTION: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ECIR 2021 will be an online event. We leave these pages online in order to let you visit, albeit virtually, the beautiful city of Lucca.
Lucca is a destination of historical beauty and one of most beloved cities of all Tuscany. ECIR 2021 attendees will enjoy walking in the narrow, medieval streets of the Roman-founded city, or jogging on the beautiful road that runs atop of the uninterrupted set of ancient walls that encircle the historical city. Most of the attractions in Lucca show its history: from the trace of the Roman amphitheater that can be seen in the shape of Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, to the cathedral of San Martino and the various towers and villas dating back from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Other top attractions include the Piazza San Michele with its beautiful 13th century Church, the Basilica of San Frediano, as well as the Clock Tower and Guinigi Tower, to name just a few. Lucca and its surroundings are rich in history and, at the same time, open to the future. Throughout the years, this medieval Tuscan city has remained very well-preserved, and relatively untouched by wars. The streets and piazzas of the historical centre, the churches and buildings, and its overall urban layout, show how smooth and uninterrupted its development has been over the centuries. This provides an ideal setting for a campus, such as the one where ECIR 2021 is going to take place, within which experiences can be shared and personal contacts can be enhanced.
